“Mother!” Trailer: Jennifer Lawrence Has Unwanted Guests and Horror/Thriller Fans Rub Their Hands with Anticipation

There may be no ghosts or ghouls in Darren Aronofsky’s Mother! but while watching the latest trailer for the film I am reminded somewhat of Guillermo Del Toro’s haunted house feature, Crimson Peak (2015). What there does appear to be is a beguiling mystery that Lawrence’s character will unpack over the course of the film’s running time. Appropriately, the trailer asks many questions and leaves the door open for the inevitable terror to come.

Written and directed by Aronofsky, Mother! is the story of a happy couple (Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem) finds their lives interrupted after the arrival of several uninvited and suspicious guests (among them Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer).

The tone of the trailer seems to be closer to out and out horror than Aronofsky has come before, however, trailers for films with darker themes tend to overplay the horror angle in an attempt to pre-empt what the audience wants. Look, for example at the bungled marketing for Trey Edward Shults’ It Comes at Night (2017), which was mismarketed as a horror causing the film to lose the goodwill of its gore-hound audience who were anticipating a different film. Let’s hope this is not the case for Mother!

Aronofsky has skirted with the genre before, most notably with Black Swan (2010), so it’ll be interesting to see him indulge further into the darker reaches of his imagination. One thing is certain: prepare for the unexpected.

Mother! is due to be released September 15th of this year and will be distributed by Paramount Pictures. It also stars Domhnall Gleeson, Kirsten Wiig, and the ever watchable Stephen McHattie.
